A lot had been said about this game during the week. I say during the week, the 48 hours before it, cause that’s all we get in between games. Not that I’m complaining from a spectator point of view - I love all the football - but it is quite tiring. I’m not sure I quite get the same buzz I used to from Premier League football. Even when goals go in, I just don’t feel it like I used to. Is it cause of VAR? Do I just not care as much anymore? Is it all just a bit too much? Title race chats in September, and now the festive period is upon us, it’s “who will be top at Christmas” and “who will be top at the start of the year” like it really matters. Does any of it really matter? In truth, it’s all just a bit crap, isn’t it? All crap, except the football itself.
The football match was good. In fact, it was exhilarating, but I can’t help but think Arsenal were there for the taking, especially in the second half. Liverpool played well, perhaps the best they've played all season in the league, and Arsenal were playing right into their hands. Arsenal are a great team, and have some very talented players, but again, I can’t help but think Liverpool of two years ago dismantles them. Between 45 and 65, Liverpool of two, maybe three years ago goes up a gear and punishes them. I think that’s where we’re at with this Liverpool team. Not quite there. Promising signs, but not quite there. And that’s fine. This was a game for the centre-backs. All four were excellent. Genuinely great. Perhaps Gabriel was the weakest of the four, but even then he gets the goal and dealt with Liverpool’s threat well. I think that might be Konate’s best game for the Reds. Was he at fault for their goal? Possibly. Sometimes you’ve just got to say fair play and accept it’s a decent cross that caught the Reds out, and it was a decent header.
Once again, Mohamed Salah, there when the Reds needed him most. I am concerned about the next few weeks due to his absence. The other lads just aren’t scoring the goals at present. Perhaps they’ll thrive, or perhaps it’ll be the start of the end of this season’s title challenge. Who knows. Time, of course, will tell.
